Artist Statement

Will's current work consists of mixed media paintings - featuring acrylic, colored pencils, crayon, ink and spray paint on canvas - that queer the landscape and our expectations (and perceptions) of space. His work begins by creating rubbings from personal, found, and/or discarded objects because of their/our relationship to the physical world, indexical nature, and allusions to topography. Some of those objects include: old milk crates from his late father’s car, heating vents in my home, the wood grain from my studio floor. The rubbings - combined with his interest in disorienting patterns, pseudo-camouflaged color relationships and self-similar forms and shapes - create environments that enable him to process, organize, and navigate moments of time, specifically his lived experiences and daily negotiations as a queer person.
